Arsenal starlet agrees new long-term contract

Francis Coquelin has agreed a new long-term deal at the Emirates Stadium that will keep him at the club until at least 2016.

As of this moment, it’s unknown precisely how long the new contract will run for, but full details will be disclosed in coming days.

The Frenchman has impressed Arsene Wenger over the course of this campaign and has slotted in to the Gunners side where needed.

The North London outfit were hit with a flood of injuries and suspensions at the start of the season which saw Coquelin get his chance to shine.

The 20 year-old did just that, performing admirably from defensive midfield as well as filling in at full-back when it was required of him.

Although he may not have been a part of the first team plans at the start of the 2011-12 year, Coquelin will now presumably feature for the Gunners on a more frequent basis after penning the new deal.

The anchorman spent last season on loan at FC Lorient, where he featured 25 times for the Ligue 1 side, earning valuable experience over the course of his stay

Coquelin was being linked with a second loan move away from the Emirates Stadium, and while the contract extension does not rule that possibility out, it makes it a lot less likely.

The youngster has proven to be a versatile asset, and while the club struggle to find form as they have done so far this season, it’s unlikely they’ll want to let Coquelin go in their time of need.
