La Liga stopper drawing Manchester United interest

Reports have emerged claiming that Manchester United could look to Valencia for defensive reinforcements as they see Adil Rami as a potential investment.

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for several centre-backs over the past eight months and are reportedly also looking to sign Udinese defender Mehdi Benatia.

Although it’s unlikely that the Premier League side will sign both of the aforementioned stoppers, a deal seems likely to be struck with a central defender during the summer transfer window.

Rio Ferdinand is one aging star who may not play as big a role under Sir Alex Ferguson as he has in previous seasons, struggling to battle against several recurring injuries.

Many have also criticised the performances of Northern Ireland international, Johnny Evans, and rumours have arisen that he may be sold in order to bring in a more accomplished alternative.

Nemanja Vidic appears to be recovering from a serious knee twist faster than hoped and the Serbian could return before the end of the season, teaming up with fellow stars, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Both Jones and Smalling have been utilized in unnatural positions of right-back and defensive midfield this season but have performed admirably.

Rami has made 32 starts for Valencia this season, scoring three goals in the process.

The 26 year-old is contracted to the Estadio Mestalla until 2015, having only signed for the La Liga outfit in January of 2011.

However, this is unlikely to deter United, who will undoubtedly chase the Frenchman’s signature relentlessly if they decide to target him.

Valencia may not wish to sell a player they signed from Lille only last year but should they reach his reported valuation of £20m – some £11m more than they paid for his services – they may have little choice in the matter.
