Valencia PSV Eindhoven Odds : Unai Emery set for Europa League glory at Mestalla

Valencia will be looking to put their inconsistent La Liga form behind them this evening when they take on PSV Eindhoven in the first-leg of their last 16 Europa League tie.

The Spanish club progressed past Stoke City in the last round of course, securing two 1-0 victories to book their place in the round of 16. These were two hard fought wins though and it is fair to say that Valencia are not on their best right now.

In and around the two games with Stoke, they have lost two domestic games against Barcelona and Sevilla respectively. They did pick up a valuable 1-0 win at Granada last time out, but they are by no means at their flowing best.

This sequence of results has left them a massive 24 points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid, while their position in 3rd is not as secure as it once was with Levante only five points behind them.

Valencia will need to put this to one side this evening though as they look to gain a significant advantage in this evening’s Europa League first-leg.

Looking at their form at home in Europe this year, they are unbeaten across the Champions League and Europa League. They even hammered Genk 7-0 back in November, so they are a force to be reckoned with in front of their own fans, but they will still be missing  Ever Banega, Sergio Canales and Hedwiges Maduro, who are all out with long term injuries.

As for PSV, they will need to pick themselves up after an extremely disappointing 6-2 home defeat to FC Twente at the weekend. They even trailed 4-0 at half-time, so it was a thoroughly miserable day for them against the team now level on points with them in the Eredivisie league table.

Fred Rutten’s side should be boosted however by the return to the side of Erik Pieters, Orlando Engelaar and Kevin Strootman, while

They need to focus on the Europa League this evening though and making sure they are still in the tie after the first-leg. Away from home in this competition this year they have been extremely good though, winning four and drawing one so far.

Overall, this should be an extremely entertaining contest between two more than capable teams. Valencia are the favourites, but PSV are confident on the road and will be searching for a crucial away goal or two.
