Jose Mourinho jokes he might sign Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on loan

The Portuguese gaffer Jose Mourinho has joked that he might sign Steven Gerrard on loan for next season.

The Reds captain will leave Anfield in the summer and is set to start a new chapter of his career with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.

But last time Mourinho witnessed a veteran England midfielder agree a move to an MLS club, Frank Lampard was playing and scoring in Premier League – against his side for Manchester City a couple of months later.

Chelsea boss also claimed he was “sorry” to see Gerrard, aged 35, leaving the Premier League, even if his exit was weakening a rival team.

He added that he is not happy with Gerrard leaves. He would love the Premier League to keep always the best players. Mourinho thinks he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. Chelsea gaffer famously came close to signing Gerrard for the Blues in 2005, before a change of heart from the former England star, who instead committed his future to Anfield.

The Chelsea boss applauded Gerrard off the pitch when he was substituted in the second-half of last night’s 1-1 draw in the Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg.
