Luka Modric closing in on new mega deal

Redknapp believes keeping Modric means other players have stayedTottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric is closing in on a new long term deal that will keep the Croatian at the White Hart Lane club until at least 2015 worth a staggering £105k per week.

Modric, who only turned 26 last month was the subject of mass speculation during the summer with Chelsea reported to have had at least bids turned down by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. The West London club eventually turned their attentions to Liverpool’s Raul Meireles after Spurs refused to budge and even failed to enter into negotiations.

Tottenham’s manager, Harry Redknapp believes that keeping Modric is key to the clubs future claiming that if Modric had been sold, it will have led to others wishing to leave the club too.

Redknapp said:

“I love him as a player and to have lost him would have been a massive blow to the club, it would have sent out all the wrong signals and suddenly you would have had a line of players demanding to follow him out the door.”

Although a new deal for Modric is still far less than what he would have received at Stamford Bridge it does show that the player is happy to remain with Tottenham on a long term basis and help the side try to accomplish another top four finish for another stint in the Champions League.

With a new deal likely to be confirmed this week, the contract extension could be the first in a string of new deals to keep their current squad quality on par with those they are trying to compete against plus show top players across Europe that Tottenham Hotspur are one of the top teams in England to join up with.
