three men all had a bye in the first round, so this is their first encounter of the tournament and they should breeze through to the next stage of the competition.
Murray is the first man to look at and he takes on Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who had a comfortable straight set victory last time out.
The Frenchman knows that it doesn’t get much tougher than a game against Murray, but with this being the first major tournament on clay and the fact that the world number-two hasn’t played in Monte Carlo Masters yet, he might be quietly confident of a win.
It all depends on just how Murray plays of course as if he is at his best, this will be a comfortable game for him. The Scotsman can be backed at 1/12 to make it through to the next round, so it is safe to say the bookies think that Murray is going to win this one.
He hasn’t played his best tennis on clay, but with the form he has been in this campaign on hard courts, Andy Murray knows this is his time to shine.
Then, Rafael Nadal takes on Marinko Matosevic and it should be a comfortable match for the King of Clay. He is at 1/10 to win this one 2-0, so is the red-hot favourite.
Nadal is going for his ninth straight title here in Monte Carlo and he knows in order to do that, he has to be playing some excellent tennis, so this first round will be all about building his momentum and confidence, especially after so long out last year.
Djokovic could have the toughest test of the top three players as he takes on Mikhail Youzhny, who is a player capable of causing an upset here.
The Russian was a 6-4 6-0 winner over Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the last round, so he is playing well, but takes on a player in a whole different class to his first round opponent. 9/1 are the odds on a win for the underdog.
Djokovic is being offered at 1/12 to come out on top here and after living in the shadow of Nadal on clay in recent years, he is sure to be doing all he can get one over on the Spaniard in Monte Carlo.
All three men are likely to qualify and as mentioned, momentum and form is on the mind of Murray, Nadal and Djokovic. It is going to be interesting to see who they all perform on clay as it is a lot different to the hard courts they have spent the last few months on.
It should be a cracking day of action and come close of play, we could see which players look to be the strongest in this Monte Carlo Masters.
