Uefa President to investigate into clubs’ accounts
Uefa president Michel Platini has vowed to ensure that European clubs are not permitted to spend more than they earn as part of the new Financial Fair Play rule.
Platini made it obvious that his comments were directed at freely-spending clubs like Premier League leaders Manchester City and Ligue 1 table toppers Paris St Germain. Both mega-rich clubs are owned by Middle-Eastern billionaires who have invested dramatically in to their squads in order to achieve great long-term success on the football pitch.
The Uefa President has always been against clubs spending drastic amounts of money and borrowing funds or relying on wealthy owners in order to bring in big named players, and Platini has now threatened to study clubs’ accounts closely.
“The philosophy is that you cannot spend more money than you generate,” the 56-year-old told French broadcaster RTL.
“It is not just PSG at the top of the French league. You also have Manchester City at the top of the English league with their Arab owners.
Platini added, “We are in the process of studying the accounts, and we will see what we can do.
“If you set the rules for everyone, they have to apply for specific clubs.”
PSG are recently being linked with former Manchester United midfielder and former England captain David Beckham, as his currently deal with MLS club LA Galaxy expires in November.
Platini, though, is not worried about the arrival of the Englishman to French football as PSG would not have to pay any transfer fee for him.
“I’m not worried about that,” said the Frenchman. “I think it will be good for the shops.
“For football, at 36? I like David Beckham a lot. I think he has been a good footballer, but he is no longer the player he was so if he comes it will be for other reasons aside from football.”
