League form is put to one side this evening though as both teams chase alternative silverware.

Looking at Milan to begin with, they have had a slightly mixed time of it since progressing past Lazio in the quarter-final stage of this competition last month. In the three league games since, they defeated Cagliari comfortably, lost at Lazio and drew at home to Napoli.

This means they have handed the advantage to Juventus in the league, a pattern they will want to avoid in the Coppa Italia. As the home team in the first leg, the pressure is on them to take a positive result into the away game.

As for Juventus, well they have been in exemplary form of late. As mentioned, they are top of Serie A going into this semi-final and this is on the back of 25 games without defeat across all competitions.

They also managed a 2-0 win over Milan in the league earlier this year, so they go into this semi-final tie with plenty of confidence. They are the form team in Italy and arguably the form team in Europe too.

Much like Milan though, Juventus were frustratingly held to a point at home in their most recent fixture. Perhaps both teams already had one eye on tonight’s game and who can blame them?

Looking at the team news, AC Milan still have plenty of injuries to contend with, while they will could also be without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is suspended.

For Juventus, there are not too many fresh injury concerns, although new-signing Martín Cáceres is doubtful. Andrea Pirlo is also set to start, hoping to show his former Milan team-mates exactly what they have been missing.

Overall, this first leg should be a very closely fought contest between two ambitious teams. It gets underway at 7.45pm this evening.
