Andy Murray will defend a Major title for the first time when he begins the defence of his US open title against French veteran Michael Llodra in the first round.
Murray, who has been in New York preparing for the competition for the last two weeks, will step out on court full of confidence following his historic win at Wimbledon in July. The third seed may have lost in the third round in Cincinnati and Toronto since he emulated the achievements of Fred Perry at this historic London venue.
Should the 26 year old overcome the challenge of Llodra and his second, third and fourth round opponents then the prize is a quarter final with Czech star Tomas Berdych with world number 1, Novak Djokovic, the man he beat at Wimbledon, potentially waiting of him in the semi-final.
For now the focus is on Llodra. The word number 49 has won 5 career titles but has never beaten Murray in three previous meetings. There most recent clash came in the last 32 of the 2012 Australian Open with Murray winning comfortably in three sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0.
The closest clash between the two was actually at Flushing Meadow’s in 2008 when Murray fought back from losing the second set 6-1 to claim a hard fought 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 win.
Despite his good record against the Parisian the no.3 ranked Murray is taking nothing for granted, telling reporters “”It’s a tough match. Llodra is tricky player, serves well, one of the best doubles player in the world just now, very good hands, and he’s very unpredictable.”
“You need to be switched on all the time against him and play a solid match. You can’t have too many ups and downs against him because he will capitalise on that.”
Llodra, a winner of 25 doubles titles, is a serve-volleyer who loves to come to the net and can be unpredictable, in reality he should play to Murray’s strengths but with the tournament in its opening stages, shocks are ripe and the Scot will need to be on his game.
The winner of the match will face either Romania’s Victor Hanescu or Leonardo Mayer from Argentina in round two.
