Arsenal and Newcastle United are leading the chase for Lazio forward Mauro Zárate and are currently looking to move forward from an enquiry stage to something more concrete.
The 24 year old can play on the wing or, as he prefers, a second striker. Since joining the Serie A side in 2008, Zarate has made 103 league appearances scoring 25 goals in the process – some may remember the forward making appearances for Birmingham City in 2008 whilst the Argentine was there on loan from Al-Sadd.
Arsenal and Newcastle do face competition through French side Lille and Spartak Moscow who could be prepared to make an offer should the Premiership sides dither with regards to making an offer themselves.
It is believed that should Arsenal not take their enquiries further that the striker would prefer a more financially rewarding offer to play in Russia.
