Arsenal boss Wenger calls for greater defensive confidence

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has reacted to his side’s poor defensive showing at Blackburn by calling for his defenders to regain their confidence.

A wobbly defensive display saw Arsenal concede four goals as they slumped to a 4-3 defeat in a bemusing but entertaining game yesterday.

Arsenal fielded a new-look back four that included Brazilian Andre Santos and German international   Per Mertesacker, but the new faces failed to prevent Blackburn scoring three goals to take the points in a frantic second half.

“You could see that the confidence in our defenders has gone a little bit and it is important to get it back,” said Wenger.

He continued:

“It is important that we get our confidence back quickly. We made mistakes and, at this level, you cannot make the mistakes that we made.”

The Frenchman added that his team need to put the display behind them and move on:

“We were guilty (because) we made basic errors. But now you just have to focus on the next game.”
