Arsenal close in on German international signature

Numerous media outlets are reporting that Arsenal have taken a huge step in the journey to signing Lukas Podolski after agreeing personal terms with the player.

The German international was being linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the course of the January transfer window but failed to complete a transfer in a period where it is always harder to lure players away from their respective clubs.

The story took a turn for the better in February after it became apparent that Podolski had had a falling out with Cologne regarding broken promises since re-joining the club in 2010.

The Bundesliga outfit had supposedly assured the winger that a new-look squad would be built around him, and that the side would soon be challenging for Champions League football.

The issue was reported to have been swiftly resolved, however it seems as if the damage was done and Arsenal will complete a deal to sign Podolski this summer.

Liverpool were also being associated with the 26 year-old but Wenger looks to have clinched the player’s signature if reports from German newspaper Bild are to be believed.

However, the German publication is quick to point out that the formality of a transfer fee is still to be settled and while wages and agents fees can prove obstacles, the initial sum will be just as hard to come by.

Cologne are thought to value their talisman at £15m but the Gunners are some way off that fee at the moment, reportedly offering just £8m at the moment.

Arsene Wenger’s side sit in the position of power as with his contract set to run out in the summer of 2013, Cologne will be keen to cash in on their charge who is just as ready to leave the German top flight.

Spending has proven to be a difficult area for Arsenal despite claims that funds are readily available, however this looks to be one major signing they appear ready to clinch.
