Arsenal defender “getting stronger and stronger”

Mertesacker is getting stronger according to Arsenal manager Arsene WengerArsenal manager Arsene Wenger has spoken highly of his new signing and Germany international Per Mertesacker insisting the giant centre-back is “getting stronger and stronger”.

The player did receive some criticism after the recent defeat to Blackburn Rovers however Wenger is certain the 26 year old is capable of leading the Arsenal defence, an area that has come under steady fire for quite some time.

“Per is getting stronger and stronger, he is calm, intelligent and he is now showing clearly that he can lead the defence.”

Whilst Mertesacker’s recent performances have earned him praise from the 61 year old manager the player is under no illusion that there is still much work to be done, believing that he can play even better than he has been.

“If the coach is praising me, that is of course a great thing to hear, but I have to keep working on things, I know I can play even better. I want to put in some good work, especially on defence, that’s my job.”
