It is understood that Arsenal have ended their pursuit of signing Gary Cahill from Bolton. The Gunners had a bid rejected for Cahill earlier this week as the valuation fell well short of Bolton’s.
Boss Owen Coyle had revealed that he would not stop the defender joining a bigger club if a suitable bid was made, and it was believed that Arsenal would return with an improved offer.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is in desperate need to improve his defence following their horrendous display in the 8-2 thumping to Manchester United this weekend.
However a move for German defender Per Mertesacker looks imminent as the Werder Breman playr is set to undergo a medical on Tuesday.
The giant centre back is travelling to London where once the medical is completed, it is expected that he will sign a four-year contract at the Emirates.
It now looks increasingly likely that the England international will stay at the Reebok Stadium despite increase from Tottenham.
