Arsenal are set for serious talks with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen with regards to offering a contract to Germany international Per Mertesacker.
The centre-back has recently admitted to admiring Arsenal and has previously stated his intention of moving to the Premiership competition with Werder Bremen ready to accept offers now with just the one year remaining on his contract.
The Emirates side have decided that English Premiership sides are over valuing their players and feel that £12m plus for certain defenders is far too much considering Bremen could be tempted into accepting a deal closer to £6m for their defender.
Wenger has already stated that a new player would be brought into the squad on top of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who was signed on Monday afternoon and that player now looks to be someone to add some weight to the defence which was not too bad last season but were found wanting towards the end of the season.
The club are now trying to thrash a deal through to have the player available for their first Premiership match and although that could happen, it is most likely that Mertesacker will arrive after the Newcastle United match.
