Arsenal will launch a surprise bid for Santos midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso after missing out on Oscar the Daily Mail reports.
The Internacional man is being chased by Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur whilst Italian giants Inter Milan are also said to have made an approach.
That has led Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to concede defeat in his pursuit of the talented 20-year-old and turn his attentions to Brazilian international Ganso.
Wenger is keen to add an attacking midfielder to his ranks before the new season kicks off and believes the 22-year-old would give his side a fresh dimension in the final third.
The players’ representatives are thought to be aware of the North London club’s interest and are now waiting on them to make the next move with AC Milan also on his tail.
Ganso is considered one of the hottest prospects in world football and bringing him to the Emirates Stadium would be a massive coup for Wenger and provide a real statement of intent.
Santos vice president Odilio Rodrigues has confirmed the highly-rated playmaker does not want to play for the club and they won’t stand in his way should they receive an acceptable offer.
“Ganso doesn’t want to play for Santos anymore. We learned that from the club’s president Luis Alvaro last Thursday,” Rodrigues told Lancenet.
“Ganso has lost his interest in Santos so we won’t try to keep him anymore.
“However, we won’t give up his buyout fee. Since Delcir Sonda and Ganso are interested (in a move) negotiations are open but the buyout fee has to be paid.”
Ganso has won eight international caps for Brazil and will represent them at the London Olympics next month but could be priced out of a move to England by the £45 million price tag on his head.
