Sources have revealed that Arsenal have made discreet enquiries into Real Madrid’s 24 year old versatile midfielder Esteban Granero although it is unclear whether a bid will be forthcoming this January.
The Arsenal target can play both as an attacking midfielder or in that role tucked in behind the main striker. Comparisons have been made in the past with Rafael van der Vaart. He has not yet featured for his country at full international level but has featured for Spain at at every other level.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confessed that he has a large squad currently and the Emirates side are not short of attack minded midfielders, however it is believed that the player could be a long term target and more specifically one that could be bid on during the summer.
Since joining Real Madrid in 2009 from Getafe, Granero has not made as many appearances as he would have liked, picking up only 52 league appearances in the last two seasons. Fans will also want to take note that during that time the Spaniard has only scored four goals.
For a club that look to buy reasonably and sell expensively, Granero would certainly be a bargain and could be picked up for as little as £8m if that should the 24 year old continue to watch from the sidelines at a team bristling with super talent.
Many had initially believed that Arsenal were looking at a possible loan deal for former AC Milan playmaker Kaka however sources now claim that the intended target was Granero and that enquiries into his possible availability have proved “fruitful”.
