Arsenal are seriously considering a move for Inter Milan and Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o who declared on Thursday that he is keen to test himself in the Premiership after impressive goals scoring spells in Spain and Italy for Barcelona and Inter Milan respectively.
Once news had filtered through that he could be available, discussions began as to how much of an offer would be accepted by the San Siro side, especially as it looks as though Wesley Sneijder could be on his way to Manchester United. At 30 years old this summer could be Eto’o’s last opportunity to make an impact in the Premiership and with Arsenal close to sealing Gervinho and Douglas Costa, the prospect of having Eto’o in the squad too is far too tempting to let go.
Whether an approach by the Arsenal board will be rebuffed or not is something that will be very interesting over the next few weeks, the striker has admitted wanting to head for England and Inter will not be able to keep a player from leaving if they wish to try something new.
Wenger though will have to smash his transfer policy and transfer records to pieces though as it is unlikely that the Serie A giants will let Eto’o go cheap, with a possible fee of at least £18m to be considered. Robin van Persie does need help up front and with Gervinho able to play on the wing too, having the big, strong Eto’o next to you will boost confidence throughout the whole Arsenal camp.
How serious are Arsenal and how serious will Arsene Wenger be? They need experience, a leader, they need power, they need goals in the absences of van Persie. If ever there was an offer on a plate then the time is now.
