Arsenal staging late efforts to sign Bundesliga forward

After failing to maintain his spot in the Borussia Dortmund starting XI, Lucas Barrios could end up leaving the Westfalenstadion with Arsenal emerging as interested suitors.

Sunderland have been linked with a January move for the Paraguayan international but Barrios would undoubtedly opt for the Emirates Stadium should the duo remain his possible destinations.

Barrios has made over 80 appearances for the Bundesliga champions since arriving at the club in 2009 but has been limited to just one start this campaign and may be tempted by a transfer away from the club.

The 27 year-old has scored over twenty goals for Die Borussen in his two-and-a-half year tenure with the side but has failed to net in twelve appearances for the side in the 2011-12 season.

Arsenal will be expected to meet a £10m asking price for Barrios if he is to be taken away from the German outfit; a fee which could be funded by the protracted departures of Andrey Arshavin and Marouane Chamakh who have failed to impress of late.

The duo – as well as summer signing Park Chu-Young – are the only replacement attackers at the North London outfit capable of operating as a striker, however it seems none of the three meet the standards of Arsenal’s Premier League targets.

The Gunners are in need of offensive reinforcements to lend a hand to goal machine and club captain Robin van Persie who, although doing magnificently this season, would welcome some pressure being alleviated from his shoulders.
