Arsenal to offer £5m for young centre-back

Despite claims by chief executive Ivan Gazidis that Arsenal will “not hold back on their resources” it is unlikely that Arsenal will invest in a big money defender this summer.

The Gunners have been highly linked with two players in particular; Gary Cahill and Chris Samba, but Arsene Wenger is unlikely to make an offer for either of them due to high asking prices.

Cahill, 25, is rated at £17m while Samba is believed to be worth £10m, and Wenger will be tempted to go elsewhere in his ongoing search for a solid centre back.

A target that has caught his eye is Danish youngster Mathias Jorgensen who, at 21, has already earned 5 caps for the Danish national team. Jorgensen stands at 6’3” which gives him good aerial prowess, something Wenger highly covets in a potential first team centre back.

His age also links in with Wenger’s preferences, as the Frenchman is famous for investing in talented youngsters and so may prefer Jorgensen over Samba and Cahill who are both older.

Ironically, before joining his current club FC Copenhagen, Jorgensen visited Arsenal for a one week trial but wasn’t offered a contract. Now he is a target for Arsenal again and this time Wenger will pray that he doesn’t slip through the net.
