Arsenal to offer former Manchester United defender one year deal

Arsenal are ready to offer former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze a one year deal to bolster the defensive gap likely to be left by Gael Clichy after it emerged the Argentinian may not be moving to Italy after all.

It was believed that Heinze would move to Italy after leaving Marseille this summer with Roma a likely new club for him, however Arsenal are interested in offering the 33 year old something of a swansong as he looks to retire.

With Arsenal already in for the likes of Jose Enrique it is believed Heinze will merely be a back up option at the Emirates, a situation similar to that of when Mikael Silvestre joined the gunners after leaving Manchester United.

The news will not brighten many Arsenal fans’ day but as a back up to Enrique, Heinze is one player who will give 100% effort, and with the likes of Kieran Gibbs not yet the finished article, the North London could do a lot worse.

Wenger realises the need for experience and even if it is just for one year, in Heinze they will have a defender who has Premiership and Champions League experience and will stick to the job in hand when asked to.
