Aston Villa are ready to accept a £20m offer for England international Stewart Downing after it emerged Alex McLeish would be able to use the cash on two reliable replacements and still be left with change.
Villa had reportedly rejected an initial £15m bid from the Anfield side on Tuesday however the club are likely to accept an improved offer of £20m. McLeish will use those funds once secured to invest in two wingers, namely Shaun Wright-Phillips of Manchester City and the very impressive Wigan Athletic winger Charles N’Zogbia.
Whilst £20m would be more than enough to purchase the two pacemen, there have been suggestions that Liverpool could be prepared to offer playmaker Joe Cole into the mix and stick to their original bid of £15m.
