Looking at the home side to begin with, they have had lost back-to-back games against Manchester United and City respectively. In the first, they threw away a 2-0 lead, while in the second; they were on the wrong end of some poor refereeing decisions on their way to a 5-0 defeat.
Paul Lambert’s men weren’t exactly expected to get anything from these two games, but the table doesn’t make for very pretty reading going into this weekend. They sit in 18th with just two wins to their name and there is some pressure on their new manager.
The former Norwich boss has assembled a young team though and there have been some positive signs, with the recent 1-0 win at Sunderland a prime example. They need more consistency though, otherwise another relegation battle will follow and it is clear they need more service to the front two of Andreas Weimann & Christian Benteke, who have looked sharp in recent weeks despite the Villa not picking up the points.
As for Arsenal, they seem to have found their feet in recent games. A 5-2 hammering of local rivals Tottenham was followed by a victory and qualification in the Champions League.
Jack Wilshere is back in the team and contributing, so going forward, they are as strong as they possibly could be with the current squad. They will be looking to keep their good form going this weekend, playing their naturally attacking game.
Sitting in 6th position, now would be a great time for Arsene Wenger’s men to go on a decent run. If they can break into the top four by Christmas, they can perhaps assess any title chances they might have in the New Year.
Much however, will depend on their defence, as despite finding their feet going forward, there are still plenty of question marks over the back four, with only one clean sheet in their last nine games in the Premiership.
This could open the door for Aston Villa’s Chrisian Benteke, who has been the one shining light at Villa Park this season. The striker can be backed at 9/1 with Bet365 to find the net first, which considering the Gunners’ defensive frailties looks well worth backing.
In this fixture last season, the Gunners came away with a 2-1 win and they haven’t actually lost at Villa Park since December 1998.
Kick-off for the latest meeting between these two is 5.30pm on Saturday.
