Whatever way you look at it, this is simply a must win encounter for Paul Lambert’s men, but they know it is going to be far from easy as West Ham are a strong side that can move to within just seven points of the all-important 40 with a win here.
The Villains have not won in the Premier League since their 3-1 victory at Liverpool back in December and that is sure to be worrying Lambert.
They have lost vital home games to Wigan Athletic, Southampton and Newcastle United in recent weeks and West Ham cannot be added to the list.
The pressure is on Lambert as manager of the side, but he is sure to call upon the fans to make an electric atmosphere on Sunday afternoon. They are at 6/4 to win here.
Villa have to improve defensively if they are to get out of trouble as well as they are leaking too many goals at the back. Their inability to defend set-pieces is really costing them and captain Ron Vlaar has to take control.
Make no doubt about it, Lambert has the players at his disposal to come out on top in this one, none more so than Christian Benteke, who is sure to be a real handful for the West Ham defence.
The Hammers would have been looking at the Premier League table with a slight concern that they might be getting dragged into the relegation battle last week, but a hard-fought 1-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday lifted them back into mid-table.
Now, Sam Allardyce can bring a squad with plenty of confidence to Villa Park and the away team will do all they can to silence the supporters in this one. West Ham do look like good value as well as they are at 13/5.
The London side have adjusted well to life in the Premier League this season, but won’t be at all complacent as they know how easy it is to slide down the table. They might come into this one with a point on their mind and look to remain defensively strong, instead of going all-out attack.
With Andy Carroll back in action, they know the ball is going to stick when they do get it forward and the striker could be the key man for West Ham in this one.
He scored the goal against Swansea and is now looking to show he can be a real asset to the side following a frustrating campaign that has seen him plagued by injury. He is at 7/1 to score first here.
With so much at stake, this should be an intriguing encounter and it really could go either way. Kick-off is at 1.30PM on Sunday.
