Tottenham midfielder, Niko Kranjcar, is poised to become the subject of an Aston Villa advance this January, reports are suggesting.
The Tottenham playmaker has fallen out of favour at White Hart Lane, slipping in the midfield rankings behind the likes of Luka Modric, Scott Parker, Sandro, Tom Huddlestone and even youngster Jake Livermore.
Despite his high expectations, the Croatian international has only made 42 appearances for Spurs since his £2.5m switch from Portsmouth in 2009, scoring eight goals.
The 27 year-old has made only eight appearances in all competitions for the North London outfit this campaign, and isn’t expected to feature in the long-term plans of manager Harry Redknapp, who’s looking to establish the side as a more permanent fixture in the Premier League elite.
Villa already took one Spurs midfielder from the lane this year after signing Jermaine Jenas on a season-long loan during the summer.
However, Alex McCleish was disappointed to find out that Jenas would have to return to the Whites and miss the remainder of the season due to an Achilles injury.
Now the Scot is looking to tempt another Tottenham fringe player into joining the Birmingham club during the winter transfer window as he looks to revive what has been a disappointing campaign so far.
Kranjcar has 18 months left to run on his Tottenham contract but his sale seems all but done as Redknapp will surely use any funds gained to purchase another quality of player in his quest for a Champions League spot.
The Croatian – who has made 66 appearances for the national side – has found it difficult to make the grade with Spurs but showed at Portsmouth that he can be a commanding force in the middle of the park, and at a valuation of £4m, may provide some vital ammunition to the Villa frontline.
