Aston Villa wrap up first summer signature

Aston Villa have confirmed the signature of Brett Holman, who will join the club at the end of the current season.

The Australian international, currently playing for AZ Alkmaar, will be available on a free transfer as his contract at the AFAS Stadion will expire in July of this year.

Holman has made 37 appearances for The Cheese Farmers this season scoring six goals and registering assists in the process.

The 28 year-old has also featured for the Australian national side on over 50 occasions, scoring in eight.

Villa have experienced shortages on the wings this campaign after losing both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing last summer to Manchester United and Liverpool, respectively.

Charles N’Zogbia was drafted in as reinforcements but is understood to have fallen out with manager Alex McCleish after failing to live up to expectations.

With Darren Bent possibly injured for the remainder of the season, Gabriel Agbonlahor has been moved into a more central role at Villa Park, highlighting the side’s lack of cover on the wings.

Alkmaar currently sit at the top of the Eredivisie and Holman has been a constant staple in the Dutch side over the last three seasons, continuing his exploits this campaign.

Villa have shown in recent years that they have the finances available to make big money transfers but could display the importance of a Bosman deal next season after snapping up Holman in what will surely prove an economically valuable signing.
