So far, the number-three seed has been fairly lucky with the draw and not come up against anyone that has caused him any problems. Simon is ranked number fourteen on the men’s singles circuit though, so is capable of causing a bit of an upset on Monday.
Of course, if the Scotsman plays the kind of tennis that he has over the last year or so, then he should claim another straight sets victory. Any mistakes are likely to be punished though and this is sure to be a big test for Murray as he hasn’t been challenge in Melbourne so far.
Simon might be a little bit fatigued after his five-set thriller against fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils in the previous round. He eventually took the match by winning the final set 8-6. He has to start quickly in this one though and use the confidence he is sure to have gained throughout the tournament in the opening stages.
The underdog has got to the quarter-final stage at the Australian Open just one in his career and that was back in 2009, so he is sure to be desperate to reach the final eight once more. He knows that it is going to take a huge performance in order to do that.
Murray should be focusing on his own game and nothing else. If he is at his best, then he will breeze through to the quarter-finals. It might be good for him to go up against a strong opponent as the tournament really does come alive in the next round, so he has to be playing some great tennis.
The British number-one has had the better of his opponent over the years as well, claiming nine victories out of ten. The last time they met was March 2012 though and there is no doubt that Murray is a stronger player since then, so he should be full of confidence on Monday.
Later on, Roger Federer is in action as he takes on world number-15 Milos Raonic in what will be a tough test for the Swiss.
As with Murray, if he is at his best in this one, it will be a comfortable match for the number-two seed. These two have met three times in the past and Federer has won on all three occasions, so he clearly knows that it takes to beat his Canadian opponent.
Raonic has been in decent form though and dropped just one set in the opening three rounds. Federer has won every set however, so will be very tough to stop on Monday.
Both matches should be cracking encounters, but it will be a big shock if Federer and Murray don’t make it through to the quarter-finals.
