Following Newcastle’s shock decision to transfer list Joey Barton for free, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are just some of the teams in the race for his cut-price signature.
The midfielder is said to have caused disruption amongst the Newcastle United ranks after comments he made about the club’s transfer policies via social networking site, Twitter.
With a year still left to run on his contract, Barton was then announced as being transfer listed for free, and will result in the club having to pay the 28 year-old a £3.1m pay-off.
Reports had suggested that the former troublemaker was keen to stay at St. James’ Park, even after the club tried to offload him cheaply in July.
Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the bigger names rumoured to be interested in Barton’s signature even before he was listed, ad will surely step up said interest now, given recent events.
Newcastle will pay the remainder of the outcast’s £60,000-a-week contract should he not move on this summer. However, that seems unlikely.
