Bayer Leverkusen must have had something of a Champions’ League hangover when they took on Wolfsburg last weekend. Their humiliating 7-1 defeat to Barcelona in Europe’s elite competition was followed by a 3-2 loss in the Bundesliga.
Things are not likely to get any easier either as they welcome third placed Borussia Mönchengladbach to the Bay Arena this weekend.
This is the second in a tricky run of three games in the league, with a trip to Schalke a week later.
If they can win both, however, they will move onto 46 points and undoubtedly move closer to the top three places, which would ensure them a shot at qualification for next season’s Champions’ League.

Such thoughts are some way from their thoughts at the moment though, with the back to back defeats they have suffered to Barcelona and Wolfsburg having to be put to bed as soon as possible. They might just have to settle for the Europa League next season.
Mönchengladbach have hardly been in scintillating form themselves of late either, though. Two draws and a defeat from their last three games has somewhat de-railed their challenge for the title this season, and they now find themselves eight points adrift of the leaders Borussia Dortmund.
With a game against the rampant Bayern Munich to contend with after their clash with Leverkusen, they will be wary of how important it is to get the three points from this one.
When these two sides met back in October it was a feisty affair which ended as in a 2-2 draw. Leverkusen’s Gonzalo Castro received a red-card, while there were six yellow cards in the game.
Whilst that sort of passion will be just what the fans are after on Saturday, both managers will be sure to be keen to end the game with all eleven players still on the pitch.
