Bayern Munich still monitoring Manchester City winger Leroy Sane despite a move collapsing in the summer

Bayern Munich are still interested in bringing Manchester City winger Leroy Sane to the Allianz Arena in the summer transfer window.

The German international was extremely close to securing a move back to his home country but his long term injury that he suffered against Liverpool in the Community Shield just days before his move meant that the transfer broke down.

Club president Herbert Hainer confirmed that the reigning Bundesliga champions are still interested in the electric forward and are monitoring him and his progress from injury.

Bayern have been long time admirers of the 24-year-old ever since his rise at fellow German club Schalke 04.

It was reported that Bayern had shown their interest in Sane in the summer of 2016 but the player opted to play for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The Citizens brought in the young winger for a mouth-watering £45m and was one of Guardiola’s first signings at the club, but Sane proved his worth in City’s consecutive Premier League title wins.

However, in the last campaign, the German grew discontent at his lack of playing time with the addition of Riyad Mahrez to the squad and wanted to leave the club.

Munich were heavily interested in the winger as they looked to him as the heir to Arjen Robben’s throne, who was retiring from football altogether.

The deal looked to be done but Sane had to feature against Liverpool in the Community Shield but ruptured his cruciate ligament just 13 minutes into the game and thus, the move collapsed.

The German is now back from injury, having missed over 100 days, and is training surprisingly well according to Guardiola.

It was reported that Sane still wanted to leave in the winter transfer window, hoping that Bayern could strike a deal with City so that he can join the German juggernauts in the summer.

Bayern, however, decided against it as they want to see how the German can recover from such a serious injury to the dismay of Sane.

With Bayern looking unlikely to use their buy-out options on Phillipe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic, a move for Sane could still be possible on a financial level.

The winger still has a deal until the summer of 2021 with Manchester City but with the quality of attackers at the club, Guardiola could cash in on the German in the summer.
