Berbatov expecting summer stay

Dimitar Berbatov has stated that he expects to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer transfer window despite mounting interest around the striker’s signature.

The Bulgarian forward was also being linked with a move away from the Premier League giants over the course of the January transfer window but insists that any rumours of a transfer were merely speculation.

Berbatov has however admitted that he isn’t happy at Manchester United and is hopeful of once again becoming a key part of the Red Devils’ outfit.

The 31 year-old now finds himself sitting behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in the Reds’ pecking order and first team are becoming increasingly hard to come by.

It has recently emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson has offered Berbatov a one-year contract extension as part of a clause in his current deal.

The Scot is expecting the striker to accept the deal, meaning that if a summer move away does materialise, it at least wouldn’t be as a free transfer.

Speaking to Bulgarian sports website sportal.bg, Berbatov stated: “I’m not happy that I do not play. But I cannot blame anyone, especially in the media. When I have something to say, I go and talk face to face with the manager. He decides everything.”

In regards to his extension, the veteran added: “To my knowledge, the clause to extend my contract for another year is automatically activated in March. I know nothing more.”
