Berbatov to fight for first team football at Old Trafford

Berbatov will continue to fight for his place at Old TraffordDimitar Berbatov has dismissed pleas from Bulgaria fans to come out of international retirement admitting his focus is solely on reclaiming his first team place at Manchester United according to Sky Sports.

The 30-year-old has been used sparingly by Sir Alex Ferguson this season after slipping behind Danny Wellbeck in the pecking order making just two starts in all competitions despite topping the Premier League scoring charts in the previous campaign.

He was an unused substitute in last nights 2-1 Champions League win over Otelul Galati and failed to make the bench for United’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at the weekend.

Ferguson has instead the Bulgarian will get his chance to shine with the forward stating he is willing to fight tooth and nail for first team football at Old Trafford.

He said: “I want to get more chances because I know I can help the team. I’ll continue to give my best to earn my place in the team”

Last nights game in Romania saw several hundred Bulgarian fans attend calling for Berbatov to come out of international retirement. The striker admitted he was surprised by the calls but isn’t considering a return to the national side he quit in 2010.

“I didn’t expect such a reaction.” He said.

“I can’t play for the national team if I’m not playing for my club.

“I would like to thank the fans, it was very pleasant. My team-mates wondered what was happening and I had to explain to them (about the noise).”
