Birmingham City are planning on an audacious move to take Bundesliga player and Germany international Marko Marin to St. Andrews. The Carling Cup Champions may not been in the safety zone of the Premiership table just yet but sources confirm they are planning for next seasons Premiership and that they wish to launch a realistic assault on the Europa League.
Whilst many teams have been linked with the 21 year old, including that of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, a move to Birmingham does not seem out of the question with Alex McLeish able to offer the youngster european football next season. Werder Bremen on the other hand, are in a very tough relegation battle and may not even be in the 1. Bundesliga next season.
Playing on the wing, Marin has been compared to Messi although where that originates can only be comparable because their surnames start with the same letter. He is talented nonetheless and McLeish would see Marin as a perfect option to have being able to play on both sides or just behind the front man.
With Alexander Hleb’s loan period almost up, McLeish will be looking for a more long term, and perhaps less injury laden player and Marin fits the bill almost perfectly.
It has not been the best season for the young German and he is yet to start scoring enough goals to light up Europe or indeed the Bundesliga for that matter, however, with Birmingham newly appointed Carling Cup Champions, and a way in to Europe next season already certain, Marin could see St Andrew’s as the perfect stepping stone into what could, and probably should, be a much more successful career than has so far been seen.
With Birmingham City also flirting in the relegation area of the Premiership, they will need to secure survival before adding any names to their transfer wish list.
