The action gets underway on Friday evening as Schalke host Hannover. The home side would have been pleased that the winter break came when it did as they were on a poor run of six games without a win.

This form saw them slip down to seventh, so now, they need to start the year strongly and challenge for a Champions League spot. It will not be easy though as Hannover sit comfortably in mid-table, so will be looking to climb up the league this year.

The bulk of the matches are on Saturday and Bayern Munich will expect a comfortable victroy at home to Greuther Furth as it is a battle between top and bottom in the Bundesliga. Much of the news around Germany this week has been the appointment of ex Barca boss Pep Guardiola, who will take over from Jupp Heynckes in July.

Bayern are nine points clear at the top and have lost just once this campaign, whereas their opponents have only won one encounter.

Bayer Leverkusen are in second place right now and they entertain Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, who are in fourth.

This should be one of the games of the day, especially as just three points separate these two at the moment.

Mainz and Freiburg also lock horns and with these two sitting in fifth and sixth respectively, it should be another cracker. They were both in good form before the break and each sit on 26 points, so an evenly matched encounter is expected.

The onus will be on Mainz to attack in this one as they are the home side, but Freiburg are sure to be confident of claiming all three points.

Hoffenheim have lost their last six league matches, which has seen them move down to 16th place, so a result is needed when they make the journey to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Monchengladbach are chasing European football though and haven’t lost in five, which means they are just as desperate for the points in this one.

The evening kick-off on Saturday sees current champions Borussia Dortmund head to Werder Bremen. Dortmund are in third and twelve points off the top of the table, so know they are not likely to retain their title.

However, they have to keep winning matches and should have enough to beat Bremen as they are in the bottom half right now.

On Sunday ,Nurnberg take on Hamburger and with both teams currently in the bottom half, it might be a bit of a cagey affair. They are each clear from the drop zone though, so there isn’t a great deal of pressure on either side at this stage.

The final game to look at sees Augsburg, who have only managed to accumulate nine points this campaign, travel to Fortuna Dusseldorf. If the away team are to beat the drop, you feel they have to start the year flying and win here.

It should be a cracking weekend of action.
