Celtic are reportedly interested in bringing Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon back to the SPL with Neil Lennon keen to tie up a deal in January according to reports.
Signing a new goalkeeper has become a top priority for the Parkhead boss with current number one Fraser Forster set for a return to Newcastle once his loan spell in Scotland comes to an end in May. The 23-year-old is wanted back at St James’ Park to act as cover for Tim Krul meaning Lennon will need to bring in a new first choice keeper.
Scotland international Gordon has jumped to the top of his list after recovering from an Anterior cruciate ligament injury that has prevented him playing for the Black Cats this season. In his absence both Simon Mignolet and Kieron Westwood have been given the chance to stake a claim for the number one jersey with new manager Martin O’Neill seemingly impressed by the contributions.
That could open the door for Celtic who want a new goalkeeper in before Forster returns to the North East and could be willing to take Gordon on a short-term loan until the end of the season with an option to buy as he looks to regain his match sharpness. The 29-year-old was Sunderland’s record signing when joined the club for £9 million from Hearts but has seen his time in England plagued by injuries.
