Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka on his way out

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka’s time at the club looks to be nearing an end after manager Andre Villas-Boas revealed there is doubt over his future.

French international Anelka, a January signing from Bolton in 2008, is in the last year of his contract and Villas-Boas admitted he is unlikely to sign a new contract:

“We will make our efforts for him to renew but Nico has his own decision to make and I am not sure he will be willing,” said the Chelsea boss.

He added however, that Anelka was happy for the time being:

“Nico as a person is very, very happy, he belongs to Chelsea in the last year of his contract.”

When he was asked by journalists whether Anelka had made it known to the club that he wanted to leave, The Chelsea manager replied: “Yes.”

Chelsea are by no means short of attacking prowess, with more experienced hands like Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres combined with younger talents such as Daniel Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku meaning they may be happy to cut their wage bill by letting Anelka leave for nothing next summer.
