Chelsea agree deal for contract renegade

Although we still have another ten days to wait until the January transfer window opens, Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas has reportedly gone back on his word and agreed a deal to sig Bolton talisman, Gary Cahill.

The Portuguese helmsman stated earlier in the month that he had backed out of the race to sign the centre-back, and had instead opted to increase interest in Uruguay star, Diego Godin.

However, following reports of the impending racial convictions against club captain John Terry, the manager has had a change of heart regarding Cahill and may have already made the vital first move.

Interest in the defender has been high after it emerged that Bolton were willing to sell in January, with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all monitoring his situation.

Cahill is only contracted to the Reebok Stadium side until July, and if the club decided to hang on to their prized asset until then, they risk losing the 26 year-old on a free transfer after he stated recently that he isn’t likely to sign an extension following a horrific start to the 2010/11 campaign.

England manager Fabio Capello hasn’t ignored the stopper’s exploits either, as Cahill starred for the national side seven times over the past year.

If this tally is to increase, a Premier League move would be too good to turn down given the outfits interested.

To sweeten the Trotters’ deal, it’s suspected that the Blues may offer England youngster Josh Mceachran on a six-month loan as part of a swap-deal.

At the measly sum of £7m, it’s easy to see why sides are looking to sign Cahill – who is a top quality defender on his day – and if rumours turn out to be true, then Villas Boas may have found a long-term successor as well as a temporary stand-in for Terry.

It was unveiled yesterday that Luis Suarez was handed an eight-match ban following an FA inquest, however England captain Terry’s punishment could be more severe as his investigation is being carried out by the Metropolitan Police.
