The long-protracted transfer of Kevin de Bruyne from Genk to Chelsea has officially gone through for a fee of around £7m.
The deal will go through today but de Bruyne will spend the rest of the season on loan at Genk, linking up with his new club in the summer.
De Bruyne became subject of Chelsea interest over the summer but a move failed to materialize until now due to the two parties being unable to agree finances for the deal.
The 20 year-old impressed greatly last season in Genk’s Jupiler League winning season that also saw them enter into the Champions League.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, de Bruyne said: “To come to a team like Chelsea is a dream but now I have to work hard to achieve the level that’s necessary.”
De Bruyne’s signature was never a preference for manager Andre Villas Boas as the club were chasing the starlet before the Portuguese boss arrived at Stamford Bridge.
However, AVB has told that he will support de Bruyne fully and do his best to see the winger reach his ‘maximum potential’.
Despite de Bruyne’s age, he will be eager to join up with his new teammates in July and work hard to become a member of the first team squad.
That being said, it’s more than likely that the Belgian international will go out on loan once more in order to gain experience at a higher level before acclimatising to the heights of the Premier League.
Chelsea have also announced that 18 year-old Philipp Prosenik has joined AC Milan for an undisclosed fee, fending off interest from Juventus and Bayern Munich.
