Chelsea FC continuing talks with Bolton Wanderers

Cahill is most likely to be a Chelsea player by JanuaryChelsea FC are continuing negotiations with Bolton Wanderers regarding the sale of centre-back Gary Cahill who will become a free agent next summer.

Cahill was linked with almost every club in the top six last summer but a high asking price by Owen Coyle’s side meant that the England international remained at the Reebok. With no new deal likely, Bolton will want to cash in on the defender for as much as possible in January and Chelsea appear to be top favourites.

Chelsea had also been monitoing the progress of Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic however declined to make any further enquiries into the player believing it best to pursue a defender with Premier League experience as long term replacement for captain John Terry.

Although Cahill’s defensive form could be questioned after such a poor start to Bolton’s season, Chelsea feel that they have the right man to add more solidity to their defence, believing that an English centre-back pairing of Terry and Cahill could stop the leak which has seen the West London club concede three goals against Manchester United and more recently five against Arsenal last weekend.

Whether the likes of Arsenal or Manchester City will re-launch any interest into the defender remains to be seen however it is believed that with talks between the clubs at such an important stage, only Stamford Bridge remains the most realistic option for the 25 year old in January.
