Chelsea FC hoping for defender deal to fall through

van der Wiel remains a player of interest to Chelsea FCChelsea FC are privately hoping that the proposed move of Ajax defender to Spanish side Valencia will fall through, leaving the door open for the West London club to make a move this January.

The right-back has always been on Chelsea’s wish list and with Bosingwa not getting much game time it appears the Dutchman is the number one target to replace the Portugal international. Chelsea will however have to monitor his current situation closely with Valencia keen to wrap things up as soon as possible.

Should the proposed offer from Valencia fall through then Chelsea will be ready to pounce as soon as the January transfer window opens as they look for fresh faces to continue their pursuit of Premiership League leaders Manchester City. A good run of form recently, plus beating the leaders 2-1 at Stamford Bridge has put the side back in with a chance however Villas Boas is aware that additions are required.

Van der Wiel may still be young at 23 years old however the Dutch giants are expecting bids around the £10m mark for their international and would be prepared – being a selling club – to allow the defender to depart as early as January.
