Chelsea international claims he never wanted to leave Anfield

New Chelsea signing, Raul Meireles has confessed that he only left Liverpool because it became clear that he was going to be sold anyway.

The Portuguese international completed a transfer to Chelsea in the last hour of transfer deadline day, after handing in a transfer request.

Meireles will now link up with Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea, whom he worked with while playing at Porto.

The 28 year-old noted: “When I was in Porto, I knew that I wanted to go and the club wanted to sell me, and I only had to wait for the right choice.”

He added: “The people think that I wanted to leave and it is only because Chelsea wanted me. For Andre to want me, that is why I wanted to go.”

The playmaker says that he’s settling in well at Stamford Bridge: saying: “I have a lot of friends here, Portuguese players that I know from Porto and the national team, and Jose Bosingwa helped me a lot in these first days.”
