Chelsea join race for international centre-back

Reports suggest that Andre Villas-Boas is ready to join the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham in trying to sign Bolton defender Gary Cahill, in January.

Spurs missed out on the stopper in the summer transfer window, after it appeared that the Trotters’ valuation was simply too high.

Tottenham’s North London rivals, Arsenal, opted for the cheaper alternative of Per Mertesacker, spending more money than usual but still not splashing out too extravagantly.

However, the Blues are now out to sign Cahill in the last year of his contract at the Reebok Stadium, and unless the England international signs an extension, could be available for as little as £8m in January as his club look to cash in on their star.
