Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has begun his chase to sign former charge and current Porto left-back, Alvaro Pereira.
Pereira was a key member of Villas-Boas’ extremely successful side that won the Europa League last season, as well as a staple in the Uruguayan team that won this year’s Copa America.
The initial bid is believed to be around £16.6m (€20m), falling some way short of the defender’s €30m buyout clause.
The Londoners already have Ashley Cole at their disposal, however after selling Yuri Zhirkov to the big-spending Anzhi Makhachkala, the new Portuguese boss is looking to bring in a left-sided player who can play both in midfield and defense.
Chelsea are ready to announce the £23.5m signing of Juan Mata today following a successful medical, and Pereira’s teammate, Joao Moutinho, is also thought to be a target for the Blues.
