Chelsea are set to return to Porto and Andre Villas-Boas’ old stomping ground with a second bid for their Uruguayan sensation, Alvaro Pereira.
Pereira was a major figure in last season’s Europa League winning team and the new Chelsea manager is looking to reunite with his star left-back.
Ashley Cole already dominates that role quite well, but having just sold Yuri Zhirkov to Anzhi Makhachkala, the 33 year-old wants to bring a left-sided player who can operate in defense or midfield.
Chelsea’s first bid of £16.6m was rejected earlier in the week, but Villas-Boas is keen to land his target, who has a release clause of £26m.
The Portuguese champions have already signed Alex Sandro as a replacement for Pereira, leading pundits to believe they have resigned to losing the Copa America winner. It now just seems a matter of the Blues stumping up the cash.
