Chelsea FC midfielder Frank Lampard is unsure why he has not been in the starting line-up for the Stamford Bridge side over the last two fixtures and claims he is yet to speak to manager Andre Villas Boas regarding his omission.
The England international made a late appearance against Manchester City on Monday evening and scored the winning penalty to inflict Mancini’s men to their first Premiership defeat of the season. It was however the second game in succession that Lampard has missed out on selection despite starting in five out of the previous six matches prior to that.
Lampard has had his fair share of critics over the last six months with many suggesting he is now too old to play for Chelsea however his form does suggest otherwise and his desire to play is as string as it has ever been.
“I want to play, simple as that, I’m as fit as I’ve ever been. I’ve been in a good run of form and now I’ve not been playing. I haven’t spoken (to Villas-Boas) so I don’t know [why], simple as that. I want to play. If I didn’t, there wouldn’t be any point turning up, so maybe there’s a bit of frustration because of that.”
The Chelsea midfielder added:
“I just want to play and I like to play well. I’m always at my best when I’m playing regularly. I know I’ve got a lot to give. I just want to be on the pitch and let the football do the talking.”
Whilst it appears that Villas Boas is trying to keep Lampard fresh for the amount of fixtures that will hit the club over the winter, patience might be the key at the moment where Lampard is concerned and by the looks of things, bringing Lampard on at a later point during the match appears to be working.
