Chelsea monitoring situation of Bundesliga maestro

With their summer move for Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Willian seemingly in jeopardy of not going through, Chelsea are reportedly lining up Werder Bremen star, Marko Marin, as an alternative.

The German international has become an integral member of the Werder attack since moving to the club from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2009.

It appears that the winger is set to leave the German outfit in the near future after it emerged that he issn’t likely to pen a contract extension.

With his current deal set to expire in just over 12 months’ time, Werder Bremen may decide to cash in on their talisman while interest is high and a summer bid from Chelsea now appears a distinct possibility.

Injuries have made it hard for Marin to string together a decent amount of appearances this campaign but in his previous two seasons at the club, Marin has shown himself to be a solid creator of goals.

Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal have also shown an interest in signing the 22 year-old and will pose heavy competition for Andre Villas Boas’ side.

The Blues have a number of players heading for the Stamford Bridge exit at the end of this season and with Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda ready to leave on free transfers, squad space will be freed up on the wings.

Should Chelsea commit to a Marin purchase, his transfer would be expected to cost around £14m; some £6m more than he move to Werder Bremen for three years ago.

The managerial position may be uncertain at Chelsea right now, but Marko Marin may jump at the chance for more regular chances at European football as well as the opportunity to make his way back into the German national side.
