After being linked with moves to Arsenal and Liverpool for much of the January transfer window, a summer move to the Premier League is now a big possibility for Mauricio Isla, with Chelsea now entering the race to sign the utility.
The 23 year-old has etched a name for himself as a player capable of playing across a massive array of positions including centre midfield, the right side of midfield supporting striker as well as across the back line.
With Jose Bosingwa, Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda and John Obi Mikel just some of the names likely to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, reinforcements will be needed in several areas of the side.
Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard are also two aging stars who’s days with the club appear to be on their way down and cover will be necessary when the veterans, 31 and 33 respectively, eventually give in.
Frequently featuring as either a right wing-back or right midfielder, Isla has made 25 starts for Udinese this season, scoring three goals and making two assists across all competitions.
Isla is also a Chilean international and despite his age, the utility player has made 31 appearances for the South American side since debuting in 2007.
Branislav Ivanovic has shown that he is capable of featuring at right back and with the arrival of Gary Cahill, the Serbian chances at centre back may become limited.
Should Bosingwa accept a protracted move to Roma this summer, Ivanovic would be the first choice to fill in the role, however a more natural player would be preferred.
Isla also has the advantage of being able to replace wingers Kalou and Malouda and for a reported price of £14m, the Udinese star could be available come July.
