Chelsea mounting interest in Championship starlet
The transfer saga surrounding Birmingham City youngster Nathan Redmond is gaining momentum ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline, with Chelsea appearing as late candidates to land his signature.
The youngster has been most strongly linked with a move to either Manchester City or Manchester United, however the Blues are now hoping to spoil whatever plans the duo may have had and stage a last minute bid.
Redmond has earned massive plaudits over the past six months after breaking into Birmingham’s first team and is being courted by a number of Premier League outfits ahead of a 2012 exit from St. Andrews.
The 17 year-old is also an England Under-18 international having made his debut for the side in July 2011.
Chelsea are known to be in a hunt for a winger and were thought to be close to signing Belgian youngster Kevin de Bruyne.
However after drawn out negotiations, it seems the £8m deal may have hit a snag and the £3m acquisition of Redmond may prove a ore economical purchase instead.
The West London side will soon have ample space for the teenager with both Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda expected to leave the club either this month or in the summer when their contracts expire.
Redmond has made eleven starts for Birmingham this season scoring three goals as well as making two assists.
Andre Vilas Boas seems bent on creating a new flood of youthful talent at Stamford Bridge and may consider loaning Redmond back to Birmingham for the remainder of the season as part of any deal that makes him a Chelsea player this month.
