Chelsea stopper pleased with new signing

Chelsea defender David Luiz has praised the club’s signature of Gary Cahill and has pegged the England international to become a massive success at Stamford Bridge.

Cahill made his Premier League debut in last weekend’s 3-3 draw against Manchester United in a match that also saw him team up with Luiz for the first time.

Despite Luiz scoring in fixture, the Brazilian continues to draw criticism for his apparent defensive shortcomings as Manchester United came from three goals down to earn a point from the match.

Chelsea still boast a Champions League spot with the Blues currently sitting in fourth but the West London outfit have still conceded more goals than any of the ‘big’ sides rivalling them for a top four position.

Cahill arrived at Stamford Bridge from Bolton Wanderers in early January on a cut-price £7m deal.

The 26 year-olds’ contract was set to expire this summer and while the Trotters would have liked to get more for their man, the club decided it was important to cash in on their talisman in January.

A knee injury ruled John Terry out of the fixture against second placed United, paving the way for Cahill’s debut.

After almost a month with Cahill at the club, Luiz told the official Chelsea website: “I do know it’s a good thing for Chelsea to have Gary Cahill. He is a great player who has come to help and seeing him in the changing room and on the pitch I know he is right for Chelsea and he will be a great help for the club.”

Speaking on his own role within the side, the 24 year-old centre-back added: “I just think about helping the team, not which my best position can be. The manager gives me confidence to play my football and supports my attacking moves.”
