The North-east outfit have won only once at Stamford Bridge since 1986, a statistic that is unlikely to change given the Blues strong home record this season.
Jose Mourinho’s men have won all 9 games at the Bridge, with 22 goals scored and just 3 conceded.
Despite theirs and Chelsea’s record in London, Newcastle caretaker manager Jon Carver is optimistic ahead of the game.
“We’re going up against one of the best sides – and best manager – in Europe, if not the world,” said Carver.
“We’ve got a good record against Chelsea and we have to use that to our advantage this weekend.
“It’ll be great standing in the technical area next to him. Hopefully he won’t bully me.
“I’m going to take it in my stride and I’m going to enjoy it, but I want to win.”
Despite drawing 3-3 with Burnley in their last league outing and bowing out of the cup at the hands of Leicester, Newcastle could be playing Chelsea at the right time.
Mourinho’s men have seen their lead at the top evaporate after a poor run of form that includes a 5-3 defeat to Spurs and a 1-1 draw away to Southampton.
A 3-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup will have boosted the confidence however it the league the club want and with defending champions Manchester City now level on points it will be intriguing to see how Mourinho and his men handle the pressure.
Thankfully the club have no injury concerns heading into the game, although the same cannot be said for Newcastle for whom Rob Elliot, Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Mehdi Abeid (toe), Ryan Taylor (knee), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Siem de Jong and Gabriel Obertan (both thigh) all out while Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse are both away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.
Fabricio Coloccini (buttock), Daryl Janmaat (groin) and Jack Colback and Moussa Sissoko (both hamstring) will be assessed before the game however Tim Krul is poised to return.
